Designing Perfectly, Imperfect products.
Where does the concept come from? After years of making our Ostrich shin products, we ended up with a rather large pile of materials. these pieces were just not perfect enough for or premium luxury products. At Rarity, we actively practice and believe in #nowaste, especially when it comes to natural resources; it became increasingly important to find a way to use these skins without compromising design or quality.
The best part about #designwithmeaning is that we have set parameters to work within. Design can embrace so many concepts, and in our opinion, the best models have careful considerations behind them. For the Perfectly imperfect collection, the idea of a reduction in waste, empowerment, individuality, and celebration of our heritage formed the founding principles.
Reduction in waste.
In a world increasingly focused on perfection, what happens to naturally marked leathers? At Rarity, we see the beauty in naturally marked leathers. The scratches, scars and marks validate that our animals have the freedom to express their normal behaviour, in their natural environments. All our materials are sourced from recognised suppliers, are free-range, and by-products of production. Complying with international regulations regarding AZO dye and Chromium content, and having sound, implemented social and environmental practices and policies are part of our sourcing practice.
Empowerment through design.
The only parameters given to the artisans in the making of this collection is the constructed size of the item, and to select colours that fall into a ‘family’ of colours. Design autonomy is a powerful tool. For the Artisans to realise that their choices will need to be commercially viable while retaining a unique look that has balance, has seen numerous collaborations in the factory. We love collaborative interactions needed to define the best look for every product made.
Individuality and celebration.
The Perfectly, Imperfect collection, combines clever cutting and considered design to allow for the artistic colour interpretations of our Artisans. We also acknowledge the natural imperfections that inspired our sustainable, Imperfectly, Perfect statement pieces. Our vibrant country has a heritage of colour in design, and clour becomes highlighted in each article through individual design. Created by artisans as a result of our rich cultural diversity, Rarity has crafted these pieces for the many unique, beautiful personalities and considered wardrobes.
